Change of Rule
From: 1 March 1960
Author: R.A.J. Earl
February 4th 1959 proved an important day for many of us, for it was on this date at Common Hall that the doors were opened to many who had previously been denied their freedom. An extract from the record of the proceedings of that meeting reads:-
"On the proposition of Mr. T.E. Eeeley, it was unanimously resolved that sons of a Freeman born before the admission of their father to the Freedom, should be equally eligible for admission, as sons of a Freeman born after their father's admission, thereby reverting to what·appeared to be the true position laid down by the Order for the admission of Freemen, 1551".
Credit for this change of rule must go to Mr. Ealey and to the Town Clerk and his staff who spent a great deal of time on research.
It is possible that this change of rule has escaped the notice of some who are affected by it and we hope its publication will help them to obtain their rightful inheritance.
