Aunt Sally Match Report

It was a fine sunny day which accompanied the two teams at the annual Aunt Sally match between the Sheriff of Oxford’s team and the Freemen of Oxford’s team at The Plough, Wolvercote. Colin Cook, Lord Mayor of Oxford standing in for Craig Simmons (Sheriff) arrived with his team accompanied by Howard Crapper (Chairman), and Freemen that had done the inspection of Port Meadow.

Dick Wolff took control of adding the Sheriff’s team to the scoreboard and it was 13 a side, a very good turn out from both sides taking up most of the seating area and a fair bit of the grass area.The Plough had two other groups dining at the pub and other customers which made the pub very busy.

Colin Cook won the toss and decided to go first, the Sheriff’s team scored 7 with Freemen scoring 15, next 2 legs went to the Freemen 13-9 and 24-8 the largest score from City of Oxford Freemen since I’ve been playing so it was unlucky for a sheriff’s team to come up against an in-form Freemen team. The match was won by the Freemen 3-0 and it was time to present the trophies.

The femur of the unknown Freemen in the coffin went to Mick Phillips scoring 8 dolls (3-2-3) highest scoring Freeman, and the Norman Cox Memorial Shield to David Cox for the highest scoring Freeman in one leg (x-5-2). The Sheriff’s shield went to Karen Wolff for the highest scoring Sheriff’s player with a highly respectable 5 (2-1-2). A fair few onlookers from the Plough’s customers were amused and intrigued by the game and the coffin and Freemen explained the game and showed them the coffin.

We would like to thank Tim and Kim from The Plough for holding the event and supplying the free beer from Greene King, and obviously Greene King for supplying the beer which Tim makes the arrangement for. It was a very big crowd from both teams with the Cox family out in force and the Plough very busy with other punters.
