Annual Aunt Sally Match Versus the Sheriff's Team

Author: Chris Cox

On a good Friday night after the inspection of Port Meadow, the annual Aunt Sally match between the Freemen of the City of Oxford and the Sheriff of Oxford’s team took place on the grass in front of The Plough on a portable Aunt Sally throw because of a Bee’s nest/hive in the shed.

The match was played with good humour with 13 a side. The Freemen set first scoring 8 with the Sheriff’s team hitting 3, the next 2 legs also went to the Freemen, 10-7 and 13-8 so 3-0 to the Freemen. Steve Goddard the Sheriff and his team improved massively in the last 2 legs but to no avail. The Sheriff’s shield was contested between 3 players, Russell Bright, Mark Cooper and Xander Goddard which was eventually won by Russell Bright after going from 3 sticks to 1 stick to 6 sticks.

The trophies were presented by The Sheriff, Steve Goddard with the Pewter Cup for the winning team to Chris Cox who also won the coffin with the femur of the unknown Freeman for the highest Freeman score, the Norman Cox Memorial Shield to the highest Freeman scorer in 1 leg to Mick Phillips.

We thank Tim and Kim at The Plough for their hospitality and free food and Greene King for supplying the free beer.
