Port Meadow 2020

(Cont.)

Author: Alison Cobb

This summer, Port Meadow has been in huge demand for fresh air and exercise. Several times there have been over 1000 people at the southern end. Sometimes they arrive at 8 am. with bathing towels and picnics, and spend all day by the river with many happy children safely distanced from each other. Cattle stand in the water cooling their feet, and just now the geese have started flying over from Farmoor reservoir, where they spend safe nights, to graze in daylight on the Meadow. Their calls are lovely. We have had accidents and ambulances, and very drunk people, and litter, but on the whole it has been a happy relief for people shut in the town, and delightful that there is somewhere for them to go.
