The Chairman Writes

Since June I have experienced personal mobility problems and had hoped they would improve. I have been struggling and have had a stair lift installed at home.
I am retiring my position as Chairman with immediate effect.
I took over from the formidable Fred Ingram over twenty years ago. It was my fortunate position to be Chairman as the admission of Women was agreed and introduced to the Freemen of Oxford. What a triumph that decision has turned out to be.
My personal favourite occupation as Chairman away from our Freeman Room is meeting fellow Freeman , not just from Oxford but also from towns and cities around our great country. The history of the Freemen is the history of England. Fantastic opportunity is knocking for an Oxford Freemen to become Chairman. I do not want this position left open too long so please make your application clear to myself and enjoy the many friends that this office attracts.
Our annual dinner is fast approaching on December 9th. The impressive Perch Restaurant on Port Meadow (approach via Binsey Lane) will host our amazing gathering. Please complete the enclosed application form and return with your name, address and remittance as soon as possible. I say that as our numbers are restricted this year as we move into the more intimate area of the restaurant. Canapés will be served at the adjacent Great Leys, the home of Alison and Steve prior to the restaurant meal.
The annual Aunt Sally match at the Plough in June was a splendid affair and thanks again to Chris Cox for the smooth running of this event. One person, however, was missing in that the Sheriff was absent on holiday at the time. Strangely, a good number of his team arrived and we all had a good time. Thanks again to the brewery and landlord for the free beer.
See you soon,
